Notes rapides sur un livre intéressant : A People’s History of Computing in the United States.
Inspiré du classique A People’s History of the United States, le projet est de faire un récit au plus près des concernés et d’interroger les figures classiques et opposés de l’utilisateur et du concepteur.
L’accent est mis sur l’université du Dartmouth, où fut inventé le Basic, un language de programmation, et popularisé le time-sharing. Cette technologie permettait en résumé d’accéder à distance à un ordinateur central pouvant traiter plusieurs requêtes parallèlement et répondre plus réactivement.
La thèse principale : le time-sharing est souvent pris pour une parenthèse, un succès temporaire avant l’apparition de la micro-informatique, alors qu’il s’agit d’une étape importante pour l’émergence de la figure de l’utilisateur, c’est à dire une personne avec une expertise limitée pouvant utiliser un appareil de manière autonome.

Les responsables du programme à Dartmouth avaient l’ambition d’une informatique accessible à tous. Cela se traduit par :
- Le Basic, inspiré du langage naturel et beaucoup plus simple et de haut niveau que les langages précédents
- Un réseau informatique accessible à tous les étudiants, quelque soit leur niveau et spécialité
- L’ambition (grande pour l’époque) d’un temps de réaction aux actions de l’utilisateur de moins de dix secondes

Kemeny and Kurtz demonstrated their commitment to users in their memo outlining the timesharing system. Rather than starting with an explanation of the computer processes involved, they explained timesharing from the user’s point of view— how a user accessed the machine, the commands entered by the user, and how the user exited the system. Only after that description did they detail the computer processes connecting the teletypewriters, the Datanet-30, and the GE-225 computer.

L’autrice va plus loin : les gens n’étaient pas seulement des utilisateurs mais de vrais « citoyens informatiques ». Il n’y avait pas de frontière nette entre créateurs et consommateurs. Chacun pouvait créer des programmes et les distribuer. Le réseau était utilisé pour tout, du travail sérieux au potin. Tout ceci créait un fort sentiment d’appartenance et de responsabilité.
« The students shared and consumed news— « gossip »— about what was happening at their schools, creating social connections from Connecticut to Maine. Indeed, the students protected the integrity of the gossip file as a point of pride. As Nevison relayed, « Any prankster at the school could have destroyed it.… Yet, because the students knew it was theirs, it was successfully used all year with only a few minor mis haps. »

« But at the University of Illinois, the people who used PLATO during the 1960s and 1970s accessed computing as members of a community, as part of a network. Students, educators, and community members sat in front of personal terminals, and they computed and communicated as a public good, subsidized by the federal and state government. They watched movies on their CRT displays, and they manipulated chemical bonds with the touch screens on their plasma displays. They were not consumers. They were users, yes, and in many cases they were authors, the creators of new PLATO programs. They were computing citizens. »

On pourrait opposer l’amateur utilisant son propre ordinateur personnel à l’étudiant ou au salarié utilisant un simple terminal connecté à un ordinateur géré par une administration lointaine. Cela renvoie au concept populaire à l’époque de « fournisseurs d’informatique » : on ne vend pas d’ordinateur, on fournit des services à la demande. Mais quand le réseau est financé par de l’argent public, utilisé voire géré de manière collaborative et décentralisée, cela ressemble plus à un service public.
« To me, MECC’s 1978 contract with Apple symbolized the transition from every student having a network to every student having a computer. The student gained access to a personal computer, but she lost access to her computing network. At the same time, MECC gradually shifted from offering programs as part of the commons available on its network (and subsidized by the state as such) to selling its software. »
